For Participants

All funds administered by the Carpenter Funds Administrative Office for Northern California, Inc. are directed by a Board of Trustees consisting of an equal number of Union and Employer representatives. All benefits are paid in accordance with the Plan Rules and Regulations. The funds are financed through a combination of Employer contributions made under Collective Bargaining Agreements between the Union and Employers and investment earnings.

The information provided by this website is presented in summary fashion. The Rules and Regulations of the Plan govern the administration of all benefits.

Only the full Board of Trustees:

  • is authorized to interpret the Plan Rules and Regulations;
  • has the authority to modify or change the rules of the Plan;
  • may give binding answers, and then only if you have furnished full and accurate information concerning your situation in writing;
  • shall be the sole judge of the standard of proof required in any case and the application and interpretation of this Plan;
  • shall render decisions final and binding on all parties, subject only to such judicial review as may be in harmony with federal labor policy

No Employer or Union nor any representative of any Employer or Union is authorized to interpret the Plan on behalf of the Board -- nor can these persons act as an agent of the Board of Trustees. Benefits are paid in accordance with the Plan Rules and Regulations. All other documents, including the Summary Plan Description, are interpretations of the Plan Rules, and in the event of a discrepancy, the Plan Rules prevail.


Health and Welfare

The Health and Welfare Trust Fund provides health insurance, life insurance, and disability benefits to its Participants and eligible dependents. Health insurance benefits include medical, vision, prescription, and dental for Active Carpenters and medical, vision, and prescription for Retired Carpenters. Dental benefits are optional for Retirees as a “self-pay” benefit.


The Pension Plan is a defined benefit pension plan that provides a retirement benefit for Plan participants. Under the Pension Plan, credits are earned based on hours worked per year. Several pension types are available including a Service Pension, Disability Pension, Early Retirement Pension, and Regular Pension. Participants may be eligible for benefits through a reciprocal agreement with other carpenter pension funds located outside Northern California.


The Annuity Plan is a defined contribution pension plan that provides retirement benefits for Plan participants. The Annuity Fund is based on Employer contributions placed in an Individual Account, which then accrues gains and losses. The Board of Trustees primarily directs professional investment managers to invest Annuity contributions, however, Participants are given an option to self-direct monies in their account after attending an educational seminar.


The Vacation Trust Fund provides benefits in place of accrued vacation hours and holiday pay typically provided by an employer. Paid annually on January 31st, the vacation benefit is comprised of contributions made by the Participant’s employer(s).


Carpenter Funds Administrative Office also administers the following funds:

  • Mill Cabinet Apprenticeship and Training/Employee Benefit Trust Fund
  • Building Industry Trust
  • Basic Crafts Workers’ Compensation Benefits Trust Fund

If a Participant is denied benefits under any of the Plans they have the right to appeal. Please review the Plan Rules and Regulations for more information.
